I have made many chess sets from leather over the years. I find myself surrounded by chessmen at times and playful as I am I tend to make scenes or dioramas with them.
This series of three globes came about during the start of the Ukraine/Russia conflict. I was inspired by the effectiveness with which chess pieces can represent their roles on the board whilst reflecting our social structure and deep rooted sense for hierarchy.
The three stages portrayed in this series takes us on a brief journey of war; beginning with the crowning of a fool, the destruction that follows and ending with the aftermath that is always: more dead pawns.
It cynically highlights that in the end, no matter how mighty any individual might seem, we are all just pawns wearing different hats that grant us the pretence that we are more than.
