Leather, wooden pawn.
15cm x 15cm x 18cm
"En plein air" is a playful metaphor. The pawn being the lowest ranking piece, often representative of the ordinary lay man, is often confined within its designated coloured square. This artwork offers a glimpse in the life of a pawn where it has painted a different coloured square from the one it sits on. It is an aspiring tale, perhaps of longing for change or maybe something better. But the pawn's hopes are limited to its experience of only squares, so their only aspiration is of a different coloured square. This is a deep metaphor for the human condition of boredom, ambition and the pursuit of happiness being limited by the privilege in which our lives are built upon to begin with.
